FC Bayern beat Red Star Belgrade 6-0 on Tuesday and are certain to finish top of Group B. Leon Goretzka rewarded Bayern's dominance in the first half before Robert Lewandowski put the game to bed with the quickest four-goal haul in Champions League history. Corentin Tolisso sealed the final scoreline in the closing stages.
The German record champions started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Javi Martínez, Jérôme Boateng and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Thiago anchored a midfield featuring Kingsley Coman, Tolisso, Goretzka and Philippe Coutinho, with Lewandowski as lone striker. Ivan Perišić, Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Müller took over from Coutinho, Martínez and Lewandowski in the second half.
One-way traffic
After match official Björn Kuipers whistled play underway, the Bavarians dominated proceedings. Lewandowski warmed the gloves of keeper Milan Borjan before firing inches wide following a fine Goretzka pass. Borjan saved from Coutinho, Lewandowski and Coman, but Goretzka broke the deadlock when he rose to meet a Coutinho cross, his pinpoint header sailing past Borjan.
Coutinho saw a free-kick saved as Bayern shifted down a gear, but they were always in control. Lewandowski had the ball in the back of the net before half-time, but the goal was ruled out for handball. Davies fired just over the bar, and at half-time Bayern boasted 15 shots without reply, but they were only one goal up.
Golden Lewy
Proceedings were similar after the restart. Goretzka saw a shot saved, but Bayern were awarded a penalty when Milos Degenek handled the ball, Lewandowski crashing home from the spot. Borjan proved equal to a Tolisso effort, but Lewandowski now exploded onto scene, scoring further goals in the 60th, 64th and 67th minute. He blasted home from a Tolisso cutback, converted a fine Pavard cross and crowned his heroics when he beat Borjan after a one-two with sub Perišić.
Borjan saved from Perišić before diverting a Tolisso effort onto the bar. Bayern increasingly engaged cruise control. Neuer, who had barely touched the ball owing to Bayern's dominance, saved from sub Mirko Ivanić, but Tolisso rounded off the scoreline when he found the far corner of the net, and Kuipers put the home side out of their misery.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday, when they entertain Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
