The Champions League last sixteen first leg between Red Bull Salzburg and FC Bayern ended in a 1-1 draw. Junior Adamu put the hosts in front in the first half, and despite their second-half dominance, Bayern had to wait until the 90th minute for Kingsley Coman to level the scores.
The Bavarians lined up with Sven Ulreich in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Niklas Süle and Lucas Hernández in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Corentin Tolisso anchored a midfield featuring Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané and Coman, with Robert Lewandowski as the target man. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting and Marcel Sabitzer took over from Gnabry and Tolisso late in the second half.
One down at the break
The 29,500 full house in Salzburg saw a high-octane encounter between two attack-minded sides. Bayern had the first big chance when Tolisso's strong pass found Gnabry, who drew a fine save from keeper Philipp Köhn. Müller miscued a header, but the hosts soon took the lead, Adamu beating Ulreich following a counter.
Ulreich made a strong save to deny Aaronson before Sané fired wide at the other end. Gnabry saw two efforts blocked as Bayern upped the pressure towards the end of the first half. Köhn denied Coman before Ulreich saved against Adeyemi, and Bayern were trailing at half-time.
Leveller at the death
Gnabry tested Köhn and Ulreich denied Seiband, but Bayern were clearly dominant after the restart thanks to positional flexibility. Coman and Gnabry saw their shots blocked, with Köhn saving from Sané.
The Salzburg netminder made another strong save against Coman. Choupo-Moting had a shot blocked, with Ulreich denying Adeyemi and Pavard blocking Adamu's rebound at the other end. Coman's cross-cum-shot went wide in the closing stages, but Bayern got a more than deserved equaliser when Müller flicked on a Pavard pass, inviting Coman to bury past Köhn in the last minute of regular time, and match official Michael Oliver blew for full-time.
The German record champions will be back in action on Sunday, when they entertain Greuther Fürth in the Bundesliga. Bayern and Salzburg meet again on 8 March, and buoyed by Wednesday's dominance, Julian Nagelsmann's troops will be looking to book a berth in the last eight.
