Bayern edged by Inter in first leg

FC Bayern were beaten 2-1 by Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday night. Bayern were dominant at first, but Lautaro Martínez put Inter in front before half-time. Thomas Müller levelled the scores in the closing stages, only for Davide Frattesi to restore the Italians’ lead.

Bayern started with Jonas Urbig in goal and Konrad Laimer, Eric Dier, Minjae Kim and Josip Stanišić in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Michael Olise, Raphaël Guerreiro and Leroy Sané, with Harry Kane up front. Sacha Boey, Serge Gnabry and Müller took over from Kim, Stanišić and Sané midway through the second half.

Trailing at half-time

Bayern were on the front foot at first and Olise saw an effort deflected just wide before a Kane header was saved. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer denied Gurreiro and Kane before the latter miscued a header.

The best chance came when Olise set up the unmarked Kane, who clipped the outside of the post. At the other end, Carlos Augusto hit the side-netting, but Inter took the lead when Marcus Thuram’s back-heel invited Martínez to beat Urbig, as Bayern were left to rue their missed chances at half-time.

Late comeback then setback

Munich went looking for an equaliser after the restart but struggled against Inter’s solid defence. Urbig denied Martínez before Stanišić headed over at the other end. Guerreiro fired just over and Kane put an effort wide.

Bayern saw a number of shots blocked before a Kimmich cross found Laimer, who put it back across goal for substitute Müller to level the scores. Sommer proved equal to another Kane attempt, but Inter were clinical and Augusto’s low cross soon found Frattesi to finish from close range.

The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker in the Bundesliga. The second leg in Milan is then the following Wednesday as Bayern look to turn the tie around and book a berth in the semi-finals.
