Lewandowski fires Reds into second round

FC Bayern eased into the second round of the DFB Cup on Friday evening, beating fourth-tier outfit Carl Zeiss Jena 5-0. Robert Lewandowski was the man of the match after netting a hat-trick in the first half. Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels rounded off the scoring midway through the second half in front of a capacity 19,000 crowd at Jena's Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld.

The Bayern starting line-up featured Manuel Neuer between the sticks and Rafinha, Javi Martínez, David Alaba and Juan Bernat in a back four. Captain Philipp Lahm, Vidal and Joshua Kimmich took up station in midfield, with Thomas Müller and Frnck Ribéry out wide and Lewandowski as the target man. Mats Hummels entered the fray for Martínez early in the second period, Julian Green took over from Ribéry after the hour mark, and Fabian Benko replaced Vidal with a quarter-hour to go.

Deadly Lewy

After referee Harm Osmers whistled play underway the cup holders lived up to their billing as overwhelming favourites, dominating the clash from the start. Lewandowski opened the scoring as early as two minutes into the contest, firing home from point-blank range following a Ribéry pass from the left wing and a mix-up in the hosts' box.

The Reds continued to pile forward in search of more, but further goals refused to come before the half-hour despite a number of gilt-edged chances. Lewandowski eventually doubled the lead on the break after the half-hour, capitalising on a mistake by Jena centre-back Justin Gerlach, who otherwise shone by stifling a number of chances in the box. Lewandowski then completed his hat-trick two minutes before the break, driving home from 18 yards after Ribéry kept several Jena players busy near the edge of the box.

Goal apiece for Arturo and sub Mats

In the second half Vidal and Hummels added their names to the scoresheet within five minutes. Vidal had already hit the bar before Lewandwoski set up the Chilean international to drive home from close range with 72 minutes played, and the combative midfielder then struck a post before Hummels netted a 77th-minute header from Kimmich's set-piece to round off an ultimately comfortable 5-0 victory.

Following the Supercup triumph over Dortmund, clinching the first title in the first competitive fixture of the season, FC Bayern have cleared the second hurdle of the new campaign. The next match is the Bundesliga opener against Werder Bremen next Friday.
