Late Lewy winner puts Bayern through

  • FCB reach second round
  • Lewandowski the match-winner
  • Tolisso makes first appearance since World Cup

Round two here we come. FC Bayern edged through to the second round of the DFB Cup thanks to a 1-0 win over SV Drochtersen/Assel on Saturday afternoon. Robert Lewandowski scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute for the record champions, who had struggled to break down the fourth-tier side's resolute defence. The second round will be played across the 30 and 31 October, with the draw taking place on Sunday 26 August at 18:00 CEST.

As promised, Niko Kovac fielded a "full-strength" side, albeit without the injured James Rodríguez, David Alaba and Serge Gnabry. Bayern were virtually camped in the Drochtersen/Assel half from the word go, but found it hard to find a way through the wall of red shirts defending Patrick Siefkes' goal. In fact, the hosts had the best opportunity of the first period but Manuel Neuer managed to block Florian Nagel's effort with his feet.

Kovac's charges upped the pressure after the break and had more attempts on goal, but it took until the 82nd minute for them to finally break the deadlock, Lewandowski getting a decisive touch on Leon Goretzka's shot to direct it beyond Siefkes. Bayern tried to put the result beyond doubt in the dying minutes but couldn't find a second goal, despite eight minutes of injury time. The closing stages also saw Corentin Tolisso make his first appearance since his World Cup success with France in Russia.
