FC Bayern beat third-tier side Viktoria Köln 5-0 on Wednesday night, advancing to the second DFB Cup round. Ryan Gravenberch and Mathys Tel set Bayern on their way in the first half, Sadio Mané, Jamal Musiala and Leon Goretzka adding gloss to the scoreline after half-time.
The Bavarians started with Sven Ulreich in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Lucas Hernández and Josip Stanišić in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Gravenberch featured in midfield, with Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry, Tel and Mané up front. Leroy Sané, Musiala, Goretzka, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Marcel Sabitzer came on for Tel, Mané, Kimmich, Müller and Gravenberch in the second half.
Youngsters on target
The 50,000 full house in Cologne saw Bayern in the driving seat but chances proved few and far between at first as the brave minnows made a real fist of it. Viktoria keeper Ben Voll denied Müller and Tel, but it was the home side that had the ball in the back of the net first. However, Simon Handle's goal was ruled out for offside.
Gravenberch and Kimmich saw their efforts saved but Munich made their dominance count when Gravenberch fired home from 12 yards. Bayern increasingly set up camp in their opponent's half, and Tel doubled the advantage with a glorious curler into the far corner on the stroke of half-time. His goal made Tel the youngest player to ever score a competitive goal for the German record champions.
Plain sailing
After the interval Bayern picked up where they left off and soon added a third, Kimmich's pinpoint pass finding Gnabry, whose square invited Mané to tap in. Mazraoui miscued a header and Voll made fine saves against Tel and Musiala, but the latter soon rouned off fine interplay with a cool finish into the low corner.
Patrick Sontheimer warmed Ulreich's gloves, Voll deyning Sané and Gnabry, but Goretzka crowned his comeback when he powered his way through the centre and crashed home clinically to round off the final scoreline.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday, when they travel to face Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. They will learn the identity of their next cup opponents on Sunday.
