FC Bayern beat FC Augsburg 5-2 on Wednesday night to progress to the DFB Cup last 16. In a fast-paced encounter, Mads Pedersen and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting traded goals in the first half. Joshua Kimmich handed Bayern the lead after the restart before Choupo-Moting rounded off his brace. Augsburg got one back when Dayot Upamecano deflected a cross into his own net, but Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies settled things in the closing stages.

The Bavarians started with Sven Ulreich in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Davies in a back four. Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Serge Gnabry, Musiala and Sadio Mané, with Choupo-Moting up front. Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and Marcel Sabitzer took over from Mané, Musiala and Choupo-Moting in the second half.

    Level at half-time

The 30,660 crowd in Augsburg saw the hosts get off to the better start, Ermedin Demirović hitting the side-netting before Davies made a crucial tackle against the Augsburg forward. Bayern struggled with the hosts' high pressing game, and Pedersen soon found the net from 20 yards. Goretzka headed over and Musiala saw an effort saved as Munich slowly but surely got a grip.

Keeper Tomas Koubek denied Davies before Florian Niederlechner fired wide at the other end. Musiala had another shot saved and Kimmich miscued a free-kick, but a goal was coming and arrived when Gnabry teed up Choupo-Moting, who beat Koubek from a tight angle. Bayern were dominant now but Mané, Gnabry and Choupo-Moting missed further chances, and the sides turned round with the score 1-1.

    Brace for Choupo

Bayern resumed straight back onto the front foot, and a deflected Gnabry effort crashed off the bar, with Mané miscuing the rebound. Gnabry dragged another shot wide but Kimmich went one better when he blasted home from the edge of the box. Choupo-Moting soon added Bayern's third when he capitalised on a mix-up in the box. A Coman shot was deflected behind before Augsburg got one back, Upamecano unluckily deflecting Ruben Vargas' low cross into his own net.

Bayern restored their two-goal advantage when Davies got hold of the ball near the corner flag, nutmegged an opponent and found Musiala, who sidestepped a defender and beat Koubek. Davies fired over and Goretzka turned Coman's square wide but the Canadian rounded off the scoreline in added time, making no mistake from 10 yards.

The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. They will learn the identity of their next cup opponents on Sunday.
