FC Bayern were knocked out of the DFB Cup in the second round after a 2-1 defeat away at FC Saarbrücken. Thomas Müller handed Bayern an early lead, but Patrick Sontheimer levelled the scores with the half-time whistle imminent and Marcel Gaus found the net deep into second-half injury time.
Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Bouna Sarr, Minjae Kim, Matthijs de Ligt and Alphonso Davies in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Frans Krätzig, who made his starting debut, anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Müller and Mathys Tel, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting up front. De Ligt had to be replaced with injury midway through the first half, Konrad Laimer coming on. Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman took over from Sarr, Krätzig and Sané in the hour mark.
Tough going
The 16,000 full house in Saarbrücken saw the home team spring a surprise, attacking intermittently while being solid at the back. Bayern dominated possession but struggled in the final third for large spells. A Sané square found no takers, but Bayern capitalised on the first chance of the game to take the lead, Krätzig teeing up Müller, who found the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the D.
There was concern for de Ligt when his knee got stuck in the turf during a slide, the defender hobbling off after treatment. Kasim Rabihic fired wide before Bayern forced a string of corners but failed to make them count. Saarbrücken won the ball in Bayern's half and Sontheimer soon tapped in, and the scores were level at half-time.
Late setback
Bayern went looking for a reply after the restart, keeper Tim Schreiber denying Sané twice before Musiala saw a curler saved. Schreiber beat Tel to a through ball and saved from Gnabry as the hosts increasingly sat deep.
Coman miscued an effort before Schreiber made a fine save against the Frenchman. Bayern were camped out in the final third now and Müller flicked a header just wide, with Schreiber denying Kimmich, who soon put a free-kick into the wall. With extra-time looming, the hosts then struck on the break as Tim Civeja ran down the right and cut back for Gaus, who powered home first time to seal Bayern's elimination.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker in the Bundesliga.
