Six days before the first competitive match of the season, FC Bayern suffered a setback, losing 3-0 to Napoli in the Audi Football Summit on Saturday. The German record champions were in command before half-time but failed to score. Victor Osimhen bagged a brace within two minutes midway through the second half, Zinedine Machach adding a third in the closing stages.
With most players back from their holidays after the Euro, boss Julian Nagelsmann had more options than in the first three friendlies. Bayern started with Sven Ulreich in goal, Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Tanguy Nianzou and Josip Stanisic in a back four, Leon Goretzka, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman in midfield and Robert Lewandowski up front. A number of youngsters came on at half-time.
Concern for Coman
Once referee Dr Felix Brych got the match underway, the 10,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena saw Bayern in control, with chances few and far between at first. There was an early setback when Coman had to be replaced after taking a nudge to his back, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting taking over. The first chance came after the quarter-hour, Lewandowski firing just wide from 20 yards. Gnabry saw an effort blocked, Napoli keeper Contini parrying a Musiala shot, and Choupo-Moting's bicycle kick on the rebound went wide.
Ulreich denied Elmas before Osimhen miscued a header, a deflected Gnabry shot hitting the post at the other end. Zielinski soon let fly from the edge of the box but dragged his effort wide, and the contest was goalless at half-time.
Young team undone by Osimhen
There was little of attacking note after the restart, with Bayern still dominating possession but uninspired in the final third. Osimhen dragged an effort wide but was on target three minutes later, when Bayern gave away the ball in their own half, the Napoli forward beating Ulreich.
Osimhen doubled the lead after a stray pass only two minutes later, Malcuit inviting the Nigerian to fire home. The game ebbed again, but Machach cut inside from the left and found the far corner of the net with five minutes to go, and Brych soon blew for full-time.
The Reds will be back in action on Friday, when they travel to face Bremer SV in the first DFB Cup round.
