Tottenham deny Bayern on penalties
FC Bayern fell to Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the Audi Cup final. Erik Lamela put Spurs ahead after 20 minutes, Christian Eriksen doubling the lead on the hour. Fiete Arp and Alphonso Davies levelled the scores to send the game to penalties, but Tottenham prevailed from the spot.
The German record champions sent out a makeshift line-up, Manuel Neuer and Niklas Süle being the only survivors from yesterday's victory over Fenerbahce. Bayern started with Neuer in goal and Jonas Kehl, Süle, Benjamin Pavard and Davies in a back four. Paul Will filled the holding role behind Alexander Nollenberger, Corentin Tolisso, Ryan Johansson and Sarpreet Singh, with Arp as sole striker.
Lamela puts Spurs ahead
Tottenham enjoyed a spell in command at first, Dele Alli warming Neuer's gloves before Lucas Moura drew a strong save from the netminder. Bayern upped the ante now, a Tolisso cross only just evading Pavard, the very industrious Davies seeing an effort blocked. But just when it looked as if Bayern had taken control, Lamela buried past Neuer to hand Tottenham the lead.
Lamela miscued another effort, Singh rifling over the bar at the other end. Singh fired another shot inches wide, and Tottenham were one up at half-time.
Concern for Coman, Davies equals
Sven Ulreich, who took over from Neuer, was the busier of the two keepers after the restart, denying Kane and making a very strong save against Heung-Min Son. The visitors doubled the lead when Eriksen left Ulreich powerless from 13 yards, but the Bavarians replied almost immediately, a clever Davies flick inviting Arp to charge down the centre and slot home.
Ulreich denied Kane before sub Marcel Zylla saw an effort blocked. Bayern were in for a shock when sub Coman hobbled off the pitch after a challenge. Davies sent the game to penalties when he curled home from 25 yards.
Ulreich saved from Eriksen in the shootout, but Tottenham sealed the victory after Alaba and Boateng missed from 12 yards.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday, when they take on Borussia Dortmund in the Supercup final.
