Saturday’s shock 5-2 defeat to Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena was Bayern’s first-ever home reverse on the opening day of the Oktoberfest. “Unfortunately, we came up short of what was needed to win the game today," Jürgen Klinsmann freely admitted after his first defeat as Bayern coach.
Reaction to Bayern v Werder Bremen
Jürgen Klinsmann: “We need to recognise that Bremen were the better team today, most of all because they were ruthless with their chances. They hit us with the next blow every time we were finding our way back. It’s obviously painful. Unfortunately, we came up short of what was needed to win the game today, but the team will be very self-critical when dealing with this defeat and then we’ll look to the future. As a coach, I do believe you learn a great deal from days like today. That’s the way it is in football. You have to put results like this behind you. We’re down at the moment, but we’ll get back up again.“
Franz Beckenbauer: “You get games like that sometimes. It’s the same as it was more than 30 years ago, when we lost 7-0 at home to Schalke. Bayern did everything wrong, but Bremen had six shots at goal and scored five times. It all went really well for them. They knew exactly how to approach Bayern. They forced Bayern to play it sideways and not direct into the final third, which is what Bremen did so well, especially for the first goal. It all multiplied after that. Today’s game was a bit of a rarity, but that’s football. Wednesday offers the opportunity to make the next round of the Cup, and then we’ll return to normality.“
