Dr Müller-Wohlfahrt moves to consulting role

After 31 years associated with the club, Bayern chief medical officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt has asked to be released from his duties, until the end of the season in the first instance. The board of directors and coaching staff have accepted the 66-year-old’s request. Dr. Rüdiger Degwert will now take over as head of the club medical unit.

Müller-Wohlfahrt, who joined Bayern from Hertha BSC Berlin in 1977, is a world-renowned orthopaedic and sports medicine specialist, consulted by leading athletes from around the globe on a regular basis. In May this year, Müller-Wohlfahrt opened a new state-of-the-art practice in the centre of Munich, which will now be the focus of his attention.

His duties at Bayern pass to Degwert, the German champions’ team doctor for some time now. The 49-year-old has established a practice in the new ServiceCenter at the club’s Säbener Strasse headquarters, which is also open to the general public. Degwert has accompanied the team to all its Bundesliga matches, and assumed duty in the Champions League for the first time on the midweek trip to Florence. Müller-Wohlfahrt will continue to serve Bayern in a consulting role.
