Wednesday’s squad workout at the Säbener Strasse featured an example of extraordinary dedication and commitment to a cause, as one fan made a journey of no less than 600 kilometres just to watch US star Landon Donovan, currently keeping fit as a guest at Bayern until the end of the week. Landon repaid his personal fan club with both goals in a full-up practice match between the senior squad and the third division reserves.
“Landon has made an excellent impression,” coach Jürgen Klinsmann told fcbayern.de after watching the attacker for the last nine days. “He was well-received in the dressing room too, because he’s a great lad.“ The US international has also helped keep the numbers up at a time when almost half the first-team squad is away with their national teams.
Ten FCB men are not in town right now, and with three further players (Sagnol, Altintop, Lucio) unfit to train, Klinsmann was unable to field a full eleven-man side for the game. To make matters worse, Tim Borowski picked up a minor injury during the match and broke off the session as a precaution, although Klinsmann is expecting the midfielder to be fit for Saturday’s home meeting with Energie Cottbus. The senior line-up thus included three youngsters from the reserves (Yilmaz, Ekici, Bopp).
