Cup history favours Bayern over Stuttgart

The clash for south German bragging rights between Bayern and VfB Stuttgart has been one of the country’s most emotionally-charged fixtures for many years now. The teams met just six weeks ago on the last Bundesliga weekend before the winter break, when Sami Khedira’s blistering last-minute strike for VfB robbed FCB of two points as the match finished 2-2.

Tuesday’s first game after the mid-season interval is a re-run of the fixture, as Jürgen Klinsmann and his men return to Stuttgart for a DFB Cup Round of 16 tie, in which a repeat of the draw six weeks ago is not a possibility. The sides have met six times in the competition to date, with FCB leaving the field as winners on five occasions. fcbayern.de reviews the rivals’ previous cup meetings.

1974-5, First round
The first cup clash came in the 1974-5 season. Boasting six freshly-crowned World Cup winners in their ranks, FCB squeezed past their Swabian rivals 3-2 at the Olympic stadium. New signing Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (16th minute) opened the scoring, but “Buffy” Ettmayer (58) and Heinz Stickel (61) turned the game on its head after half-time. However, a quickfire double from Gerd Müller (76) and Uli Hoeneß (80) saw Munich through to the second round.

1985-6, Final
Eleven years passed before the next cup clash – and this time it was the final in Berlin. Just a few weeks ahead of the World Cup in Mexico, newly-crowned champions FCB headed for the capital in search of a second league and cup double to go with the triumph of 1969. Roland Wohlfahrt (34, 40, 77) and Michael Rummenigge (65, 72) handed Bayern an unassailable lead, before VfB gave the final score an air of respectability through Guido Buchwald (75) and current Munich boss Klinsmann (85).

1989-90, Round of 16
Bayer’s sole cup defeat to Stuttgart came in the 1989-90 edition of the competition. A 67,750 crowd at the Neckar stadium saw Fritz Walter (43, 77) and Jürgen Hartmann (64) fire the home side to a 3-0 triumph, although they were to be dumped out of the cup in the next round by Werder Bremen.
