Bayern roared off the blocks after the mid-season break with a thumping and wholly merited 5-1 win away to Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday, comfortably sealing a berth in the last eight of this season’s DFB German Cup. “We were simply terrific today. That was football the way you want it to be played,“ beamed FCB general manager Uli Hoeneß, leading a chorus of praise for a performance replete with class.
Reaction to VfB Stuttgart v Bayern:
Uli Hoeneß: “We were simply terrific today. That was football the way you want it to be played. We knew the team was in good shape, and the mood is great. VfB aren’t really up to speed yet, but we are.“
Jürgen Klinsmann: “There’s nothing for me to criticise after that performance. It was impressive and enjoyable to watch. We were incredibly mobile, even when we didn’t have the ball. We’re doing things automatically. We were even scoring on auto-pilot. I think we’ve sent out a little signal to our rivals, indicating we have a few plans. We’re well geared up for the next four months.“
Philipp Lahm: “That’s how easy football can be, when you’re aggressive and well-organised in defence, and we obviously have true quality up front. We’ve had three weeks to prepare, and we’ve had everyone there. It means you can train effectively, and that’s what we’ve done. We hope it continues. Domestically, the only thing that can stop us is complacency. We have more quality than anyone else in the league, and we’ll show it in the second half of the season. A 5-1 win in Stuttgart is a clear statement of intent.“
