Bayern’s unexpectedly emphatic 5-0 triumph over Sporting Lisbon in the Round of 16 first leg means the men from Munich are through to the Champions League quarter-finals, barring a calamity of unthinkable proportions. “It’s hard to imagine we’ll let it go wrong now, but we’ll still have to approach the return with the seriousness it deserves," said coach Jürgen Klinsmann, praising his team for a “scintillating display”.
Reaction to Sporting Lisbon v Bayern:
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “That was a perfect game for us, although no-one could have predicted the final score. We’re delighted. Without being complacent or arrogant, I do believe we can look forward to a place in the last eight. We’re aiming high in the Champions League, although we know we’re not favourites by any means. But it was still important for us to show Bayern Munich are a very high quality team. You don’t just show up and win 5-0 against opponents of this calibre. All you can do is stand back and applaud the team.“
Uli Hoeneß: “It was tough going at first, but the team went into overdrive after going 2-0 up. We can be extremely pleased. Everything went our way today, almost all our shots went in. We’ve not had that kind of luck in the Bundesliga recently, but today we had all the luck in the world. As we’re 5-0 up, I’m assuming the return will be a pleasant evening.“
