Ukraine and Zenit St. Petersburg midfield star Anatoliy Tymoschuk will join Bayern in July this year ready for the 2009-10 Bundesliga campaign, the clubs announced on Wednesday.
“Tymoschuk is definitely coming,” Karl-Heinz Rummenigge unequivocally stated in an exclusive fcbayern.de interview two weeks ago, although the FCB chairman also said that a number of details remained to be clarified. The key issue to be resolved was a discrepancy between Tymoschuk’s current and new contracts, caused by a differing transfer windows in western and eastern Europe.
The midfielder’s deal with Zenit expires on 28 February, but his new contract with Bayern cannot begin until 1 July 2009. The clubs involved have now devised a solution, clearing the last major obstacle to the transfer.
In time for pre-season
Tymoschuk will now remain at Zenit until mid-June this year. “That’s what we’ve agreed with St. Petersburg President Djukov and coach Advocaat,“ Rummenigge informed fcbayern.de. The player will continue to train and play at Zenit until then, before taking a two to three week summer break. He will then report for duty in Munich from early July and begin pre-season training ahead of his first season in Germany.
The agreement means the midfield enforcer can still aid Zenit in their bid to retain the UEFA Cup this season. The new Russian domestic league campaign begins on 14 March. Tymoschuk is the third confirmed new arrival in Bavaria this summer, joining Ivica Olic from Hamburg and Alexander Baumjohann of Borussia Monchengladbach.
