After six minutes of Bayern’s meeting with Bremen, Hamit Altintop had plenty of time to consider his next move – perhaps too much time. As he dribbled alone towards Christian Vander, he had three options: round the Werder keeper, pass to Franck Ribery, or shoot at goal. Altintop elected to shoot - and Vander denied the Turkey international the opening goal.
“I had to put that one away. It could have been a very different result,” Hamit reflected ruefully in the aftermath of Sunday’s goalless draw. The 26-year-old started a match for the first time in six months. “It was a good thing for me,” he opined. Altintop was sidelined from mid-August until December last year after surgery to repair metatarsal damage. A goal would have made it the perfect comeback, regardless of the name entered on the scorer list.
