Reaction to Leverkusen v Bayern

‘We have to pick ourselves up and move on’

The first trophy of the season slipped from Bayern’s grasp on Wednesday, after the DFB Cup holders fell 4-2 away to Bayer Leverkusen at the quarter-final stage of this term’s competition. “Leverkusen played well and deserved to win. Unfortunately, we have to write off the cup for this season. We’re left to concentrate 100 percent on the Bundesliga and the Champions League," coach Jürgen Klinsmann commented afterwards.

Reaction to Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern:

Uli Hoeneß: “It was an excellent performance by Leverkusen up to the point where they led 3-0. They caused us no end of trouble. But our reaction to going 3-0 down was unbelievable, we were closer to equalising than they were to scoring a fourth. But once you’ve thrown everyone forward, you can always get caught on the break. Leverkusen came at us right from the start, while we tried to keep a lid on the game. We basically succeeded until well into the second half, but we conceded goals to individual errors. It was always going to be difficult to come back from that. The job now is to restore the players’ confidence and belief, and make sure we hit our targets in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.“

Jürgen Klinsmann: “Obviously, the players are gutted. We desperately wanted to make the semi-finals, but it wasn’t to be and that’s a bitter pill we have to swallow. It was an open and attractive match from the off. Leverkusen piled on the pressure, they were very aggressive, and they pressed us in every area of the field. They never let us get going. They played well and deserved to win. We failed to move the ball at speed, stretch the play wide, and create space for ourselves. We also made mistakes and paid for them. It looked bleak at 3-0 down, but the team fought back with great determination and came close to equalising. There’s no point in giving the lads a rollocking, we have to pick ourselves up and move on. Unfortunately, we have to write off the cup for this season. It means we’re left to concentrate 100 percent on the Bundesliga and the Champions League.“
