The first all-or-nothing fixture of the campaign has arrived, exactly the wrong moment for Bayern to suffer their worst selection problems of the season so far. Both Philipp Lahm (flu) and Luca Toni (Achilles) have been ruled out of Wednesday evening’s DFB Cup quarter final encounter away to top flight rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
“Philipp is recovering, but it’s too early for him to return,” reported Jürgen Klinsmann. Germany international Lahm should be fit in time for Saturday’s home Bundesliga meeting with Hannover 96, but Toni is already rated doubtful for the Allianz Arena clash. “We’re not totally sure what’s going on. It’ll improve for a day, but the pain comes back. The medical unit’s doing everything it can to get to grips with the problem,” Klinsmann revealed.
Even without Lahm and Toni, Bayern have their sights firmly fixed on a place in the semi-finals. “We want to contest all three trophies right to the end. The lads are really hungry approaching this match,” Klinsmann said ahead of the final pre-match training session at the Säbener Strasse. “It’s a chance to take a giant stride towards a trophy,” Tim Borowski agreed.
