Before Jupp Heynckes took to the Säbener Strasse training ground in earnest for the first time in almost 18 years, the immaculate pitch belonged to Hermann Gerland alone. Consulting a large sheet of paper he held in his hand, Heynckes’ assistant coach walked the playing field distributing different coloured cones. After a final, careful check over the training plan, the stage was set for the new coaching duo to supervise their first training session.
At shortly before quarter past four, Heynckes emerged first from the dressing room, followed by Gerland. The new bosses welcomed 20 players to the workout, including reserve hopefuls Thomas Müller and Holger Badstuber, and keeper Michael Rensing, taking part as an outfield player due to a hand injury. Miroslav Klose (recovering from surgery) and Breno (torn muscle) were absent, while Lucio (ankle) went jogging on his own.
