Bayern lost at home to Schalke 04 on Matchday 29, Munich's third defeat at home in the league this term. The champions dominated for long spells but failed to create enough clear-cut chances and were unable to cancel out Schalke's shock first-half opener. Despite the defeat, captain Mark van Bommel insisted Bayern can still claim the championship shield: "It's a setback in the title race, but it's never over."
Reaction to Bayern v Schalke:
Franz Beckenbauer: "We now have to take every match as it comes and win our last five matches, because we want to finish at least second and qualify directly for the Champions League. If Wolfsburg beat Cottbus [on Sunday], it'll be very difficult to reel them in."
Jürgen Klinsmann: "That's a very bitter defeat, because we went into the match with high hopes. We were outstanding for the first twenty minutes, we dominated the match, we piled on the pressure, and we created a chance or two. Then, out of the blue, they won the corner and made it 1-0. Schalke defended their lead with everything they had after that. We didn't manage to create many more clear-cut chances and equalise. Obviously, I'm angry and not a little frustrated. But there are still five games to go, and who knows what'll happen to Wolfsburg in Cottbus. We'll take as many points as we can from our remaining games."
