Uli Hoeneß brandished the green card. Not the red for Bayern or the white for VfB Stuttgart, but green for VfL Wolfsburg. Hundreds in the studio audience and millions watching ZDF’s Saturday night Sportstudio magazine show at home witnessed the FCB general manager back the Wolves, who play all in green, to win the Bundesliga title.
“Make no mistake: Wolfsburg have firmly tipped the scales in their favour with today’s phenomenal victory,” Hoeneß reasoned. His fellow FCB board director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge agreed: “It’s looking really good for Wolfsburg. They only need a point, and they’ll get that point at home to Bremen. I don’t think they’ll let it be taken from them now.”
With just one game to go, the Bayern management has more or less written off the title for this season. “We have a three to five percent chance of winning the league,” commented Hoeneß after a 2-2 draw away to TSG Hoffenheim. Leaders Wolfsburg thrashed Hannover 5-0 away from home, and now hold a two-point and seven-goal advantage over FCB, who are level on points with third-placed Stuttgart. Hertha BSC Berlin are a further point behind in fourth.
