“5 games! 5 wins! FCB for the title!” The Allianz Arena south terrace loyalists voiced their dream in big white letters on a red banner, although the championship shield would rate as a bonus for Bayern this season. “Our primary target is second place,” emphasised Philipp Lahm following the first of what everyone at the club hopes will be five victories in the rest of the campaign. The 2-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach was a maiden success for caretaker coaching duo Jupp Heynckes and Hermann Gerland, and was also vital in its own right. “We’ve come to a phase in the championship where the only thing that matters is points, regardless of how we get them. It worked out for us today,” commented Uli Hoeneß.
The Bayern camp was satisfied both with the win and the way the team dealt with obdurate relegation candidates Gladbach. “I think it was obvious we were enjoying our football this afternoon,” said Lahm, “we were all wide awake and hit the ground running. There was plenty of movement, everyone wanted the ball.”
