Reaction to FCB v Schalke

'We've taken a big step in the league'

The streak continues! Thanks to a strong second half FC Bayern won a tenth consecutive Bundesliga fixture following a Champions League match. “In the first half we were a little too slow. We did better and scored the goals in the second half,” summarised Robert Lewandowski. Pep Guardiola was pleased, but saw room for improvement, especially in the light of the first half.

Reaction to Bayern v Schalke

Pep Guardiola: “I was a player myself, and I know how hard it is three days after a Champions League match. But that's no excuse. In the first half we didn't get into the match for a long time. There was a very big difference between the first and the second half. I'm pleased about the victory of course. We've taken a big step in the league, now we want to go through to the cup final. I hope this match was a lesson for the match against Bremen on Tuesday.”

Manuel Neuer: “We had difficulties getting into the game in the first half. We lacked rhythm and changes of pace. We did better in the second half and were always a step quicker than Schalke after that.”

Robert Lewandowski: “In the first half we were a little too slow. We did better in the second half and scored three goals, we played really well then.”

Horst Heldt (Schalke sporting director): “We defended well in the first half, but were too cautious in attack. Bayern were stronger after the interval, we weren't really alert. The crucial point was that we conceded the second goal too quickly after the opener. Bayern were too strong for us then.”

André Breitenreiter (Schalke coach): “We played really well in the first half. We were disciplined, aggressive on the wings, pressed high up the field and allowed them very few chances. We were also dangerous on the break, but lacked precision. In the second half we were too passive, and Bayern upped the pressure. If Lewandowski has so much space he makes ruthless use of his chances. Now we have to keep our heads up. We did many things well.”

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke captain): “Against Bayern you have to attack immediately or play defensively, like we did. In the first half we did well, but we had to deliver a better final pass. In the second half we weren't as awkward, and Bayern scored their goals.”
