A German footballing first! If the sixth DFB Cup meeting between FC Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg goes to extra-time, it will give both coaches extra options. Instead of three substitutions, Carlo Ancelotti and Valerian Ismael will be able to make a fourth change! This new rule has been introduced for the round of 16 of both the men’s and women’s DFB Cup. fcbayern.com has gathered all the other facts surrounding tonight’s Cup game.

Strong run against the Wolves

These two sides have previously met five times in the DFB Cup – and Bayern have progressed every time! The last meeting came last season when FCB knocked Wolfsburg out in the second round with a 3-1 victory. Will the sixth follow later today? Well, the Bavarians have a good record against the Wolves in all competitions, with 34 wins from 45 competitive encounters (7 draws and just 4 defeats).

Round of 16 regulars

FC Bayern have reached the last 16 of the DFB Cup for the 16th time in a row following a 3-1 win at home to FC Augsburg. The record champions last failed to reach the last 16 in 2000/01 when FCB fell in the second round to 1. FC Magdeburg (4-2 on penalties). Bayern have also progressed from the round of 16 on all but one occasion at home – the only failure came via a 4-3 defeat to Karlsruher SC in 1988/89.

Quick reunion

FC Bayern and Wolfsburg meet at the Allianz Arena just 59 days after the last encounter there. FCB were convincing 5-0 victors in front of their own fans on 10th December. Arjen Robben opened the scoring before a Robert Lewandowski brace made it 3-0 by the hour mark. Thomas Müller ended his 999-minute goal drought in the 76th minute, and substitute Douglas Costa made it a round five shortly before the end.

Drees with the whistle

Dr. Jochen Drees will take charge for the round of 16 match between Bayern and Wolfsburg. He last refereed the Reds in October’s 2-0 home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. His assistants are Timo Gerach and Christian Gittelmann, Arno Blos is the fourth official.
