As is traditional at this time of year, FC Bayern is presenting its new home kit for the coming season. And for the 2017/18 campaign, the German record champions and their long-standing supplier adidas are reliving a successful period from the club’s past. The new shirt pays homage to the kits of the seventies when FC Bayern collected numerous national and international trophies and laid the foundations for the worldwide fame that the club still enjoys today.

“I was lucky enough to wear the 1977 kit and even at the time I really liked the design,” commented chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the reissued jersey. “This kit symbolised the start of a great era. Bayern had just won the European Cup for the first time. We were also German champions and many of the players from this team had also become World Cup winners in 1974,” recalled club president Uli Hoeneß, looking back on the great successes of his playing career.

The new home kit features striking white stripes on the traditional Bayern red, with white stripes on the shoulders and sleeves rounding off the streetwear look. The FC Bayern motto – ‘Mia san Mia’ – is also emblazoned on the collar of the shirt. The kit is inspired by history while offering modern functionality and gives both players and fans maximum comfort thanks to the breathable mesh fabric. The kit is complete with red shorts and red socks.

“You have to feel comfortable in a kit. It has to have some connection to the club and give you a good feeling,” commented Thomas Müller, highlighting what he thinks is important in a kit. The retro aspect rounds off the new home jersey. “It obviously makes you think of the three league titles and the likes of Gerd Müller, Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge,” added Müller.

The new kit will get its first outing at the Allianz Arena this Saturday in the final game of the season against Freiburg. It’s available to buy now from the FC Bayern online shop and all FC Bayern fan shops as well as adidas.co.uk/football-clothing and selected adidas stores.
