Record run to milestone Cup tie

FC Bayern have already lifted the DFB Cup 18 times and are the record holders in this competition. The next step towards trophy number 19 is possible on Tuesday night in Leverkusen. The stats are on the side of FCB:

DFB Cup record favours Bayern

Four of the previous five DFB Cup ties against Bayer 04 have been won by the reigning German champions. Bayern only failed once in the quarter-finals in the 2008/09 season. The match ended in a 4-2 defeat under the coach at the time Jürgen Klinsmann. Leverkusen have only won one of the last 12 matches against FCB and that was in May 2015 when Bayern were already champions. There have been four draws – all at Leverkusen.

Impressive away form

FCB are unbeaten in 25 DFB Cup games on the road, which represents a record in this competition. Bayern have kept 17 clean sheets and have an impressive goal difference of 80 for and 10 against. The Reds have clocked up 22 wins over 90 minutes and three on penalties.

Milestone in DFB Cup

The tie against Bayer 04 is match number 250 in the DFB Cup/Tschammer Cup for FCB. FC Bayern’s 200th cup game was also against Bayer 04 Leverkusen: That was the previously mentioned 4-2 defeat in the quarter-finals in 2009.

Record number of semi-finals

Bayern have set another record by reaching the last four of the DFB Cup: FCB have now been in the semi-finals for nine times in succession. The last four were won away from home without conceding.

Heynckes returns to old stomping ground

On Tuesday night, coach Jupp Heynckes returns to his former place of employment before his move to FC Bayern in 2011. From 2009 to 2011 he led the Werkself to fourth and second place in the Bundesliga. Heynckes is now looking to take Bayern through to the cup final and thereby prevent Leverkusen returning to Berlin for the first time since 2009.

Siebert in charge

The semi-final against Bayer 04 will be refereed by Daniel Siebert. Coincidently, the 33-year-old sports scientist from Berlin refereed this season’s opening match after the winter break with FC Bayern running out 3-1 winners at Leverkusen. Siebert will be assisted by Lasse Koslowski and Markus Häcker and the fourth official is Harm Osmers. Dr. Jochen Drees and Daniel Schlager will be the video assistants.
