FC Bayern lost the DFB Cup final on Saturday, missing out on the domestic double. The German record champions slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt. Jupp Heynckes spoke of an "avoidable defeat" in his last match as a coach in which FC Bayern failed to convert their chances.
Reaction to Bayern v Frankfurt
Hasan Salihamidzic: "We should have scored the goals. We had four, five good chances in the first half. We didn't have as many in the second one but dominated the match. Frankfurt tried to stifle our play and counter. They succeeded at it today. Still, we should have been awarded a penalty, it would have been 2-2 then, but the referee had a different opinion. It's no use talking about it, it's over."
Jupp Heynckes: "If you lose you don't have to talk about the referee. I have to congratulate Eintracht on the cup victory. We made a mistake in our build-up play which resulted in the opener, we were a bit unlucky when Robert Lewandowski's free-kick hit the bar. Our opponents stuck to their play, they're resolute, aggressive and very hard-running, so we have to accept the result. Frankfurt displayed a boundless will to win the final. It was an avoidable defeat. If you don't take your chances you shouldn't be surprised to lose a final like this."
Thomas Müller: "We didn't quite put our plan into practice in the first half, even if we had good chances at the beginning. Then we went one down after a mistake in our build-up play. Frankfurt played as we had expected them to. We had a number of chances, Frankfurt scored two goals from three or four chances. It's extremely bitter. We don't need to draw a conclusion right now."
Niko Kovac (Eintracht Frankfurt coach): "We all dreamed of it before the match. I'm delighted for the club, the fans and my great team. You can achieve anything if you close ranks. That's what marks this team out. Last year we failed, this year we made it. Our triumph wasn't undeserved. I'm pleased with the title but also sad that I'll leave."
Kevin-Prince Boateng: "It's just incredible. All credit to this team. We showed passion! If you fight and believe in yourself you get rewarded."
Bruno Hübner (Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director): "Hats off to the team's display, even if we were a bit lucky in the end."
