FC Bayern are the German champions again – and this time not just in football. The FCB Basketball players won their fifth and decisive final match on Saturday evening against Alba Berlin by 106-85 to secure the German championship. It’s the club’s fourth title following successes in 1954, 1955 and 2014. On the back of the cup win in February (also against Alba) it means a first double in the team’s history.

Bayern showed from the off who wanted to win the title and got the first points on the board. Dejan Radonjic’s side never looked back from that point as they led until the very end thanks to an impressive display. The majority of the 6,700 fans present in the Audi Dome – including FCB President Uli Hoeneß – were hugely impressed and knew early on they would have reason to celebrate. Prior to the final quarter, Bayern even increased their lead to 25 points and ran out deserved winners.

It crowns a superb campaign for FCBB, who had already finished the regular season top of the table. There was also no stopping the Munich side in the play-offs against Fraport Skyliners and then Brose Baskets. However, they began the final series with a home defeat. They rallied in the next two matches with back-to-back wins before a narrow defeat in Berlin on Wednesday. But thanks to the victory in the fifth match, captain Anton Gavel and his side can finally pop the champagne.
