Niko Kovac can barely wait for Sunday evening and his first competitive match in charge of FC Bayern. The fact he kicks off his reign against his former club adds even more to the debut. “It’s a truly special game,” said the 46-year-old in anticipation at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Supercup against Eintracht Frankfurt.
“I’m returning there very soon after I left. It’s a great city and a great club with great fans and a great stadium. I can’t find enough superlatives to describe it all,” the former Croatia international added. Kovac spent two and a half years on the touchline in Frankfurt, leading the Eagles from the relegation play-off all the way to a DFB Cup title and Europa League qualification.
Objective: First title
He now returns to the Commerzbank-Arena for the first time as an opposition coach. “I don’t know what to expect. I don’t think the fans will have forgotten what we achieved together in the last few years. The fans will acknowledge that. It was a nice time, so I hope it’ll be positive. But if that isn’t the case then that’s also fine.”
The former midfielder is in particular looking forward to seeing some familiar faces once again. “I’ll see a lot of friends. I’ll always remain in touch,” the FCB coach explained before clarifying, “I’ll probably speak to them before and after the game, but during the match we’ll give our all to win this first game and the first trophy.”
This is the second aspect that makes the game so important. “It’s about picking up that first trophy. It’s a really important title for me. There are two special points that will hopefully work out well at the weekend.”
