There have only been three previous encounters between FC Bayern and Hertha BSC in the almost 70-year history of the DFB Cup. The Munich men triumphed in the first round in 1967 (3-2 aet) and 1986 (2-1), while the Berliners won 4-2 after extra-time in their 1977 quarter-final meeting. Strangely, all three matches took place in Berlin, as does their fourth cup clash on Wednesday. fcbayern.com has picked out some other interesting facts and figures on the last 16 match-up.
FCB’s winning away run
FC Bayern have been quite literally unbeatable away from home in the cup in recent times. It’s almost 10 years since their last defeat on the road, a 4-2 reverse at Bayer Leverkusen in March 2009. Since then, the Reds have gone 28 away ties without defeat, conceding just 13 goals (18 clean sheets) and scoring 89.
Hertha winless at home since 2011
In contrast, Hertha’s home record in the competition leaves a lot to be desired. The Berliners have not won a cup match in the capital since December 2011 (a 3-1 victory over Kaiserslautern) and have lost all three since then. That success against Kaiserslautern was also their last cup win against a Bundesliga rival.
Dreaming of final at home
The DFB Cup final has been played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin since 1985, but the stadium’s occupants have never been involved. The closest they came was when they reached the semi-finals during the 2015/16 season, and they’ve also been to three quarter-finals. Their reserve team did make it to the final in 1993, though, losing 1-0 to Leverkusen. Bayern, on the other hand, have played in a full 15 finals since 1985 and lifted the trophy 11 times.
