Alphonso Davies will have to wait a little longer before going on his summer holidays. The FC Bayern midfielder marched into the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with Canada and will play against Haiti or Costa Rica on Sunday night (30 June, 1 am CET).
To survive the group stages Davies & Co. needed a victory in the final match against Cuba. They got it in some style, running out 7-0 winners (HT: 4-0) after an impressive performance. Jonathan David fired the North Americans into the lead after just three minutes, and the Canadians continued the match in commanding form with Lucas Cavallani running riot in the first half. He scored after 21 minutes, added a second in the 43rd, and completed a hat-trick a minute into injury time. David Hoilett increased Cuba's misery five minutes after the break, before David added a further two goals to seal an emphatic win. Davies provided the assist for the fourth goal with a delicate pass and unselfishly set-up his teammate for the fifth when he found himself alone in front of goal. After 70 minutes his day's work was done and it was time to start the preparations for the quarter finals.
