While the Bayern players are toughening up at their training camp in Tegernsee, the Allianz Arena is smartening itself up for the start of the Bundesliga. Eight days before the reigning German champions kick off the 2019/20 season at home to Hertha BSC, FCB’s home was laid with new turf.
The new carpet consists of around 620 rolls of lawn each weighing approximately 800 kilograms and measuring 1.2 x 10 metres, made of ‘Poa pratensis’ meadow grass from Alt Zachun near Schwerin. Following completion of the work on Thursday, the pitch will immediately be playable and Niko Kovac’s men can look forward to the perfect surface for the new season.
Since the last change of turf in September 2018, the Allianz Arena pitch has witnessed 20 competitive Bayern games as well as four matches in the Audi Cup, youth tournaments such as the Youth Cup and of course a few beer showers during the title celebrations last May – something the new pitch is certainly ready for, too.
You can catch a glimpse of the new turf on the Allianz Arena Webcam.
