FC Bayern won their first Bundesliga match in the nascent season thanks to a hat-trick by Robert Lewandowski. The Poland captain scored all three goals in the 3-0 victory over FC Schalke in Saturday's top match. "I try to help the team," said a modest Lewandowski. His coach praised the man of the match but also the whole team: "It was a smooth display and a good performance," summarised Niko Kovač.
Reaction to Schalke v Bayern
Niko Kovač: "We were in control over 90 minutes. We didn't allow anything and made no mistakes today. It was a smooth display and a good performance."
Robert Lewandowski: "I can always do better, I have room for improvement. I can do special things every season but I try to help the team. A player can win a match on his own, but we win titles as a team. I always try to score, regardless of the opponents. The Bundesliga isn't an easy league, we must rev up physically, we must always be ready."
Philippe Coutinho: "I'm very happy I made my debut. We won the match, so it was a nice evening. My first impressions are very good. The club is gigantic, the possibilities are amazing. The game here is very intense. I've been here for three or four days, and I know I have to improve. I'll work hard."
David Wagner (FC Schalke 04 coach): "Taken altogether it was a deserved victory. Lewandowski showed why he's one of the best. My team did a good job in the second half. We would have deserved a goal."
