Davies' goalscoring run against Mainz

It’s quite an impressive record: whenever Alphonso Davies has played against 1. FSV Mainz 05, there’s been something for the Bayern starlet to celebrate. In his two previous encounters with the Rhineland-Palatinate outfit, the Canadian has enjoyed two convincing wins and got on the scoresheet himself both times. Ahead of this Saturday’s Bundesliga clash at Mainz (kick-off 15:30 CET), fcbayern.com looks back at those matches:

Davies’ maiden goal for Bayern

Davies’ special relationship with Mainz began on 3 March 2019. The then 18-year-old came on around half an hour before the end of the match – and just 10 minutes later, he was on his knees celebrating. Davies pounced on the rebound from Robert Lewandowski’s shot and rounded off a 6-0 victory against the 05ers.

Davies modelled his celebration during Bayern’s 6-0 win over Mainz on a Bayern legend: “I wanted to do the Robben,” he said later.

It was his first goal in Germany’s top flight in his fifth appearance, which he duly celebrated with his teammates. “Wow! I’m still speechless now,” said the youngster a month later in an interview with fcbayern.com, recalling a special moment in his career.

Goal number two follows against Mainz

Maybe this was still on Davies’ mind in his second meeting with Mainz at the end of August, because once again it took him less than a quarter of an hour after coming on to get his name on the scoresheet.

Nach starker Vorarbeit von Thomas Müller musste Alphonso Davies den Ball beim 6:1 gegen Mainz am 3. Spieltag nur noch über die Linie schießen.
Simple task: After good play from Thomas Müller, all Davies had to do was bundle the ball over the line in the 6-1 triumph against Mainz on Matchday 3.

The wide player again sealed the final score, finishing off Thomas Müller’s assist to net the second Bundesliga goal of his career against Mainz. The Canada international is yet to add to his tally – maybe it will happen again in his third meeting with Saturday’s opponents…
