Nine facts on the opener against Hertha Berlin

FC Bayern kick off the second half of the season with an away game at Hertha Berlin on Sunday afternoon (15.30 CET). Since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963, it's the second time that the two teams have met at the start of the second half of the season. fcbayern.com brings you some of the most interesting stats and facts on the game against Hertha Berlin.

1. Second clash at restart

The first fixture between FCB and Hertha on matchday 18 was in the 2000/01 campaign. The first match in the second half of the season back then was before the winter break with the record champions winning thanks to goals from Roque Santa Cruz, Stefan Effenberg and Alexander Zickler in a 3-1 victory in the capital.

Alexander Zickler makes it 3-1 at Hertha Berlin on matchday 18 in 2000/01.

2. Impressive in opening fixture

In recent years, FC Bayern have almost always started well after the winter break winning six of the last seven league games at the start of the new calendar year (the only defeat was a 4-1 reverse at VfL Wolfsburg in 2014/15). Last year FCB started with a 3-1 win at Hoffenheim at the start of a successful chase to catch up Borussia Dortmund.

3. Outstanding record against Hertha

Sunday brings the 70th meeting of the two teams in the top flight. The record is clearly in favour of FC Bayern with 39 wins, 20 draws and just ten defeats and a goal difference for the Reds of 155 for and 75 against.

4. Good run

FC Bayern have only lost one of the last 17 Bundesliga games against Hertha Berlin (12 wins, four draws): That was a 2-0 defeat in Berlin in September 2018.

5. Which run will continue?

Three games, three wins, 11-2 goals – that is the impressive return for FC Bayern in the Bundesliga to end 2019. Hertha also had a good run before the winter break: None of the last four games were lost (two wins, two draws) and they did not concede in the last three fixtures. Which team will continue their run in the New Year?

6. Goals guaranteed

Most of the games between FC Bayern and Hertha Berlin have seen the two sides score with relative ease, only six games ended goalless. The most goals came in 1975/76 with a 7-4 home win for Bayern that saw Gerd Müller score five. The highest scoring game in Berlin was a 6-3 win for FCB in May 2003.

FC Bayern clocked up a 6-0 victory in Berlin in March 2012 and thereby celebrated the biggest of the previous 39 wins in the league against the team from the capital. The goalscorers: Arjen Robben with three penalties, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos and Mario Gomez.

8. Biggest defeat

FC Bayern have only lost ten times in the 69 Bundesliga games against Hertha. The biggest defeat was a 4-1 reverse in 1974/75 at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin where the current chairman of the board Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scored the only goal of the game for the Reds.

9. Latest strike

In the 1-1 draw on matchday 21 in 2016/17, Robert Lewandowski scored the equaliser for FCB on 95 minutes and 59 seconds. That was the latest Bundesliga goal since records were first kept in 2004/05.
