FC Bayern turned in an impressive display on Saturday evening, downing FC Schalke 5-0 and cutting the gap to league leaders RB Leipzig to one point. "We're very satisfied with the match. We just played well as a team," Thomas Müller commented after the final whistle. Coach Hansi Flick said after the second victory in the second match after the winter break: "The way we played has to boost our confidence. The quality in the squad is outstanding, and if I can up the ante as I did today I'm very satisfied."
Reaction to Bayern v Schalke
Hansi Flick: "It was very good today. Schalke turned in an impressive display in their first match against Gladbach. But we played at home and wanted to stick to our play, our philosophy. We wanted to disturb them early, to put them under pressure, with high intensity. We did very well, especially in the first half. The main thing is we've taken three points. The way we played has to boost our confidence. The quality in the squad is outstanding, and if I can up the ante as I did today I'm very satisfied."
Thomas Müller: "Maybe we were a bit more resolute after Leipzig's result. Usually we can only give it 100 percent, but maybe we gave it two or three percent more today. We wanted to allow them no air to breathe, as we did against Dortmund. We're very satisfied. We just played well as a team. I'd rather be the hunted, but we have no choice at the moment, we must accept our role as hunters."
Leon Goretzka: "Within a few weeks Hansi Flick has created an atmosphere that allows everyone to feel at ease. He provides us with a tactical plan for every match. It's important that we can see development, that we improve with every match. The goal was special of course. It's no secret that I had five very, very nice years at Schalke and that I felt very much at home there."
David Wagner (FC Schalke coach): "It was a deserved defeat. We didn't play well, and if so it just happens that you go down as we did today. First and foremost it was down to the quality Bayern displayed today. They were really strong, whereas we surely didn't live up to our full potential. Many, many things have to come together to take something away from Munich, and it didn't work out today."
Bastian Oczipka (FC Schalke): "We didn't display anything that marked us out in other matches. Ultimately it was the right result. Bayern are an outstanding team, we knew that of course, but we just didn't display what marks us out in other matches. It went missing today, so it wasn't enough."
