If football fans feel a strong longing for top-class football this Saturday, then there's a good reason. The clash between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund was supposed to take place this weekend, but the current coronavirus crisis and the pause in the Bundesliga means all games continue to be postponed. It's a good excuse to look back at past meetings. Bayern celebrated one of their most impressive victories exactly two years ago.
Six eggs in the Easter basket
The tension was high and the season's end was imminent. On 31 March 2018, BVB visited the Allianz Arena for the prestigious Bundesliga match-up and a few days later, Sevilla were waiting in the UCL quarter-finals. The men from Munich laid down an impressive marker on Holy Saturday in the league, pulling off a phenomenal 6-0 win against an off-form Dortmund side in their 900th Bundesliga home game. The record champions scored five goals in the first half alone. "The way we played in the first half was really amazing," said Robert Lewandowski after the game. The Pole was the star of the evening with three goals. The striker gave FCB the lead in the fifth minute, later scoring two more goals to take home the match ball.
Five goals by the break
Coach Jupp Heynckes was delighted with the "gala performance" because "it all looked very easy, very elegant in the first half." Bayern's desire for goals paid off again shortly before the end: Lewandowski (87) made it half a dozen for FCB after build-up play from Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Müller.
Groundhog day
However, the game had one small downside: If Schalke had not beaten Freiburg a few hours earlier, FC Bayern would have celebrated the title in front of their own fans for the first time since 2000. In the end, coach Heynckes' team secured the title a week later in Augsburg. But a 6-0 win against Borussia Dortmund certainly gave the Munich fans enough party spirit.
