Against Frankfurt: Five moments from the history books

FC Bayern and Eintracht Frankfurt follow in a long tradition this weekend. Ahead of the teams' next meeting in the Bundesliga, we look back at five particularly legendary, emotional and curious matches against Eintracht.

18 May 2019 – Title celebrations & fond farewell

The trio of Robben, Rafinha and Ribéry celebrated numerous titles with Bayern.

You don't have to look back far when it comes to memorable games against Frankfurt. The last day of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season was a very special one. It was goodbye to Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry and Rafinha, three legendary Bayern players who shaped the club for many years. The day went as if scripted. Ribéry and Robben both scored their last goals for Bayern in their final home game. In addition, Munich secured the German championship with the 5-1 win over the men from Hesse - the first time this had happened at the Allianz Arena!

6 April 2013 – Heel provides success

Schweinsteiger celebrates. Bayern's midfield engine demonstrated the finest technique on this day.

Back in 2013 the Bavarians wrapped up the title with a win against Frankfurt - the fastest championsip triumph in history. In the 52nd minute, when the score was 0-0, Philipp Lahm crossed in to Bastian Schweinsteiger, who deflected the ball directly into the Frankfurt net with his heel. It was the decisive goal for Bayern's 23rd league title as the game finished 1-0. After 28 games played, FCB could no longer be caught in the Bundesliga. Definitely one for all-time! The goal of the month award naturally followed.

18 September 1999 - Tarnat becomes keeper

It was a tough day for FC Bayern - but nevertheless the Munich team sealed a sensational victory against Eintracht on Matchday 5 of the 1999/2000 Bundesliga season. After 20 minutes, FCB were already behind, and Michael Wiesinger had to leave the field for injury in the first half. The big shock came in the 56th minute: Sammy Kuffour  caught Oliver Kahn's head with his knee and knocked him out. Bernd Dreher came into the game for the injured Titan. But the replacement goalkeeper didn't last long either. After only eight minutes of play, Dreher suffered a cruciate ligament rupture. Discussions took place as Ottmar Hitzfeld considered which outfield player to put in the goal. Then Michael Tarnat reported to the coach. The full-back had trained in goal in the past and convinced Hitzfeld to put him between the posts. The plan worked: Tarnat kept things tight in the box in exemplary fashion and Giovane Élber and Kuffour turned the game around. In the end, FCB celebrated an incredible 2-1 win.

19 August 1989 – Augenthaler's goal of the decade

In the summer of 1989 the Bavarians beat Frankfurt with a dream goal. Klaus Augenthaler scored the official goal of the decade in the first round of the 1989/90 cup with his 1-0 winning strike. The Bayern captain dribbled through the midfield in the 34th minute and noticed Eintracht keeper Uli Stein had moved away from his box. The sweeper did not hang around and tried his luck from the halfway line. He succeeded with a true work of art that flew beyond the entire Frankfurt team into the net - it was the only goal of the game and Munich advanced to the next round.

12 June 1932 – The first title

A big leap back in time for an even bigger event: In 1932, FC Bayern secured the German championship for the first time in club history. The final against Eintracht Frankfurt was a great pilgrimage for the fans. Thousands of FCB supporters traveled by bike from Munich to the final in Nuremberg. They witnessed a 2-0 victory for Bayern, with goals from Oskar “Ossi” Rohr (36) and Franz Krumm (75). The records of the title celebration are equally legendary. As the first club in the city to be crowned German champions, they took carriages back to Munich city centre, where the fans were waiting. The beginning of an incredible success story.
