Title reaction: “You never succeed alone, only together”

CAMPEONES, CAMPEONES, OLE, OLE, OLE! FC Bayern are German champions! Thanks to a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen, the men from Munich celebrated their eighth successive league title on Tuesday evening with two games to spare. “You never succeed alone, only together,” highlighted head coach Hansi Flick. Match-winner and top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski said: “It’s not been an easy season, we’ve fought long for the title.” fcbayern.com has rounded up the reaction to FCB’s latest title.

Title reaction:

Hansi Flick: “Credit to the team! The way we’ve played in recent months – you feel the passion, the character, the joy of playing, the fighting spirit. Bremen didn’t want to go for it too much at the start but then they plucked up their courage when we went a man down. There’s no criticism today. You have to emphasise how the team have achieved this. You never succeed alone, only together. It’s a delight for me to be involved. The group personify the confidence of ‘Mia san Mia’. The lads possess enormous quality and the coaching staff trust them. This is Bayern Munich, the targets are always high. We’ve reached the first one now, the next one is the cup. You can’t plan the Champions League. It will always just be one game. We need to be in top shape when the time comes.”

Robert Lewandowski: “We’re German champions. It’s obviously a bit difficult celebrating without fans. That certain something extra, that passion is lacking. We’re nevertheless very happy. It’s not been an easy season, we’ve fought long for the title. I hope we get to celebrate with the fans in the stadium soon. In the first half, Werder played rather defensively but played well. In the second half we needed to score to make it a bit easier. We’ve shown we’re the best team in Germany and we want to play even better in the Champions League.”

The statements from FCB president Herbert Hainer and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge:

What the FCB legends say

Philipp Lahm: “Congratulations on winning the eighth league title in a row! In recent weeks you’ve shown in impressive fashion why you deserve to be at the top of the table.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger: “Yes! Congratulation on the eighth title in a row! I have great memories of the first three.”

What the DFB officials say

Joachim Löw (head coach of the German national side): "Congratulations to FC Bayern, especially to Hansi Flick, the entire coaching team and the players. It was not just the coronavirus pandemic that ensured that Bayern had a few hurdles to overcome this season. For a long time, the situation at the top of the table was closer than people have been used to in previous years. In the end, however, it was impressive to see how Bayern once again asserted themselves. With their quality, their mentality and a large slice of love of the game, FCB have become more and more dominant as the season's progressed".

Fritz Keller (DFB President): "This title is a special one – because it is their 30th in total and the eighth in a row for Munich, who continue to build on their outstanding record. It is a great, and not entirely unexpected, success in a difficult time, which can be attributed to the professionalism of the whole club. But this title is also an exceptional one because it came about under extraordinary circumstances. A title win in front of empty stands is also something that's new for the German record champions. I hope for Bayern that they will soon be able to celebrate this title win with their fans."

Christian Seifert (DFL CEO): "Congratulations to FC Bayern on winning the German title. They have defended their title and have won in a very unique season in light of the temporary suspension – especially thanks to remarkable performances in the second half of the season. My congratulations also go to Hansi Flick and his coaching staff and those in charge at the club."

Rainer Koch (DFB Vice President): "FC Bayern have underlined their dominance in German football. Kudos! Of course, this season will be remembered above all for the exceptional circumstances surrounding it, but the sporting success achieved by Hansi Flick, his team and the whole club will not be diminished by this at all."
