Mr 'Silver Platter': Thomas Müller equals Bundesliga assist record

If you look at Thomas Müller's perfectly timed and tailored cross to Robert Lewandowski's goal to make it 4-1 in Leverkusen, a phrase quickly comes to mind: 'As if it were served on a silver platter', and this image immediately evokes a connection to Munich's assist king. Because the hunt for very special silverware, the championship shield, has been driving the 30-year-old to top performance after top performance for weeks.

Mr "Silver Platter"

In the 4-2 win away to the Werkself on Saturday, Müller assisted twice. In addition to Lewandowski, Leon Goretzka also benefited from an assist from the Munich man, who recorded assists number 19 and 20 this season, thus equalling the Bundesliga record since the start of detailed data collection, a record held by Kevin de Bruyne, once of Wolfsburg. The Belgian also collected 20 assists in the 2014/15 season - and Müller still has a few games left to beat the Belgian's record.

On course for a record championship

In total, the 2014 world champion has already been involved in 27 goals this season (seven goals, 20 assists) and set a new personal best. Thanks to his masterful assist precision, the Bavarians are still on course for the title. For Müller, it would be the ninth championship of his career, also a record - and that is probably the greatest incentive for Müller to continue providing assists to propel the team to success.

In Leverkusen, Leon Goretzka benefited from a Müller lay-off and rounded off a strong performance in his own special game

Suspended for next game

Next week at home against Borussia Monchengladbach, however, the Bavarians will have to do without their top provider. Müller, like his team-mate Lewandowski, received his fifth yellow card of the season and will be suspended for Bayern's next league outing.
