Bayern players set for international action

The celebrations over the treble have barely died down but for some FC Bayern players, the next assignment is already round the corner. The first international fixtures for nine months start next week, with the likes of Germany coach Joachim Löw announcing their squads in recent days. fcbayern.com rounds up which of the treble winners will be in action, where and when.

Löw has opted to leave out the Bayern players who have played a lot of matches in recent weeks, meaning Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry get a rest. However, Niklas Süle and new signing Leroy Sané are in the squad for the UEFA Nations League matches against Spain (3 September) and Switzerland (6 September). “They’ve had injury lay-offs and need to get back into the rhythm of training and matches,” the Germany boss explained his decision.

The first opponents for the 2014 World Cup winners have a treble winner of their own. Thiago has been selected by Spain coach Luis Enrique for their Nations League games against Germany and Ukraine (6 September).

David Alaba is being rested and will not travel to join the Austrian national team.

Treble winner David Alaba will not be joining the Austrian national team. The defensive specialist is being rested for the next two games in the Nations League, on 4 September in Oslo against Norway and 7 September in Klagenfurt against Romania. "After lengthy discussions with Hansi Flick and David personally, I have come to the conclusion that I can do without him. After the intensive Champions League finals tournament he has some groin problems, so he should now take time to recuperate ahead of his autumn commitments. The long-term health of the player is a priority," said national coach Franco Foda.

Poland without Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski finished the Champions League season as the top goalscorer with 15 goals.

Goal-getter Robert Lewandowski, meanwhile, is getting a well-deserved rest. The forward has not been included in Jerzy Brzęczek’s Poland squad for their Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands and Bosnia and Herzegovina. “I spoke with Robert and we both felt this is the time for him to recover after some physically and mentally draining encounters,” said Brzęczek, explaining the decision to leave out his captain.

Perišić in action

There’ll be no such rest for freshly crowned Champions League winner Ivan Perišić, who has been called up by Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić for their upcoming Nations League matches. The 2018 World Cup runners-up take on Portugal on 5 September before travelling to France on 8 September.
