It’s a coach’s dream to have a player who can play in various positions without his level ever dropping. Joshua Kimmich is the perfect example of that. Whether at full-back, centre-back, defensive midfield or even further forward, the freshly crowned treble winner always performs to the maximum, as shown by his nomination for the UEFA positional awards. The Germany international is in the category of defenders, only narrowly missing out on the midfield nominations (sixth place).
Kimmich inherits Thiago’s number
It’s there that Kimmich has since claimed his position in front of the back line and has now been handed the pertinent shirt number. Following Thiago’s departure to Liverpool, the 25-year-old has succeeded the Spaniard as Bayern’s No.6. It’s the number he’s been wearing for some time with the Germany national team.
Successors of Flick and Demichelis
Prior to Thiago (2013-20), many big names had worn the No.6 at Bayern, including Martin Demichelis (2003-11), current coach Hansi Flick (1986-89) and Franz “Bulle” Roth (1973-78). Kimmich now continues this esteemed list. And in fitting with his style, you know there’ll be no difference in performance from wearing the No.32.
