On Wednesday evening, FC Bayern host Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup at the Allianz Arena. Although FCB are participating for the ninth season in a row, the competition will be held in Munich for the first time since 2012. The match against BVB on 12 August was a precursor to the historic 2012/13 season, as Jupp Heynckes' team put on an exceptional performance.
Bayern overwhelm Dortmund
In the 6th minute of the game, Franck Ribéry whipped the ball in perfectly from the left flank to the feet of Mario Mandžukić. The Croat had no problem controlling the ball after the fantastic build-up play and slotted home to make it 1-0. A little later, Thomas Müller (11) buried a rebound after Arjen Robben hit the woodwork - 2-0.
The first cup - of many
After this, the home side had numerous other chances, but could not increase the lead any further. BVB only gained some momentum after the break, and Manuel Neuer hardly had to intervene. The keeper had no chance with Robert Lewandowski's (then still in yellow) 75th minute goal. Even this did nothing to stop Bayern's well-deserved victory and Philipp Lahm received the trophy.
Do it again!
It was the first trophy of a season in which three more followed with the championship, DFB Cup and the Champions League. Even after this opening game you could see what Bayern might be able to achieve that year. We're looking forward to Wednesday!
