The Munich public health office decided on Thursday that the opening match of the Bundesliga season on Friday against FC Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena must in fact be played without spectators present. On Wednesday, representatives of FC Bayern had agreed with representatives of Bavarian and Munich politics that 7,500 spectators could be admitted, corresponding to 10 per cent of the 75,000 capacity.
FC Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “I am sad that it isn’t possible to hold the opening Bundesliga match on Friday in front of spectators after all. Following the agreement reached on Wednesday evening, we were very much looking forward to it. FC Bayern had prepared very conscientiously for the return of spectators with a top concept and in compliance with all health and hygiene regulations. We all want to see atmosphere and emotions in the stadium again, so, of course, it remains our wish and goal to play in front of our fans again as soon as possible. They are a very important part of football culture.”
