Niklas Süle joined up with the Germany squad this week as a freshly crowned treble winner. On Süle’s 25th birthday on Thursday, the team coached by Joachim Löw play Spain and that’s followed with a game against Switzerland on Thursday. The Champions League winner sees the matches in the Nations League as “perfect preparation” for next year’s European Championships. Süle has ambitious plans. “We have a team capable of competing for the title,” the central defender said at the Germany press conference on Tuesday.
Parallels between FCB and Germany
He certainly knows about winning titles this season and the three-time champion of Germany sees certain parallels between the FCB and Germany: “We have the same hunger with Germany as we do with Bayern. There’s no great difference.” He would normally be with his FCB teammates Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry but the quartet have been given a week off after all the hard work in recent weeks.
Get in the groove
However, that’s out of the question for Süle. “I need the games to get back up to speed,” said the 24-year-old Germany international. But he does have Bayern support at the Germany camp in Stuttgart as FCB new signing Leroy Sané is also there. The duo have known each other for years and the 2017 Confed Cup winner is “incredibly happy” the winger is now wearing the red shirt.
Süle is incredibly happy with Sané
“His quality gives us more alternatives. But he’s a real asset for us on and off the pitch. He’s a barrel of laughs and a fun-loving guy. That lad’s great,” said Süle in praise of Sané. They now want to celebrate success together with Germany to be up to speed with Bayern at the start of the season.
A number of other FCB players are away on international duty in addition to Süle and Sané. Find out more here:
