Football kits are much more than items of clothing. They show identification and still elicit great emotion even after years in the cupboard. Over the course of Bayern’s 120-year history, the club has had a number of legendary shirts, which you can see here in a gallery of all home kits since 1965. Under the motto “The past forms the future”, the German record champions, partner adidas and designer Pharrell Williams have used a previous jersey as the basis for a great campaign intended to raise awareness for diversity, tolerance and peaceful togetherness.
Memories of Pflügler, Matthäus, Scholl & Co.
Bayern icons such as Lothar Matthäus, Hansi Pflügler, Mehmet Scholl and Christian Ziege once worse these shirts between 1991 and 1993. “They were and still are expressive visual statements of a great era of design,” said adidas head of design Jürgen Rank. Pharrell used them to design colourful new shirts celebrating the diversity of the world. Everything looks homemade and even imperfect – exactly how it should be. “Our goal was to surprise the jersey world. The design thrives on simple imperfection,” explains Rank.
Football shows all are equal
Serge Gnabry is enthusiastic about the campaign and is also fully committed. “Football makes it possible to experience that all people are equal. When you put on a jersey, you belong to the same team - no matter where you come from or what you look like. We players support this campaign. We are for diversity.”

New Swedish signing for the FCB women, Hanna Glas, also takes a similar view. “We are all different, but we are all the same as people. I really like this special jersey because it conveys an important message - and because it looks cool and different.” The Bayern first team plan to wear the kit in the second round of the DFB Cup on 22/23 December.
