Bayern head to Austria for the third game of the 2020/21 Champions League group stage with the chance to do more than just extend their lead at the top of Group A. The defending champions also face two firsts and can extend a number of records. fcbayern.com looks at some of the most important facts and figures for the match away at Red Bull Salzburg.
1. Double debut for Bayern
It may seem hard to believe in Bayern’s long European history, but the six-time champions have actually never faced Salzburg in competitive action. This is also the club’s first encounter with an Austrian team not from Vienna.
2. Strong record against Austrians
Rapid and Austria Vienna are the only two teams from across the border that Bayern have faced in continental competition. The Bavarians boast a positive record from four matches against each, winning five, drawing two and suffering just one defeat, against Rapid in February 1697.
3. Extend record run
Bayern have won 13 straight matches in the Champions League, which is the longest run in the competition since it changed from the European Cup in 1992/93.
4. Flick’s Champions League clean sheet
The treble winners have won all 10 of their Champions League matches under Hansi Flick, scoring 36 goals at an average of 3.6 per game. No other coach to take charge of at least five games in the competition has ever gone so long without defeat.
5. FCB’s strong away run
Bayern are also in a league of their own on the road in the Champions League, going 14 games unbeaten away from home (W11, D3). Only Manchester United have ever managed a longer streak in the competition (16 matches between 2007 and 2010).
6. Goals guaranteed
If the stats are anything to go by, fans can look forward to plenty of goals on Tuesday. Since the start of last season, only Champions League games involving Bayern (58) and Atalanta (43) have produced more goals than the eight involving Salzburg (38), even though the Austrians have only played in the group stage.
7. No points for Salzburg against European champions
This is the third time Salzburg have competed in the Champions League proper and the third time they’ve come up against the holders. In 1993/94, they lost both encounters with AC Milan, before two more defeats against Liverpool last season. Now the Austrian champions face Bayern…
