It's a home game to start the year! FC Bayern host FSV Mainz 05 for their first game in 2021 on Sunday (18:00 CET). It's the 29th Bundesliga meeting between FCB and the Zerofivers. fcbayern.com has put together the most interesting facts and figures for the game:
1. Bayern strong at the start of the year
Will the run continue? FC Bayern have won the opening game in the new calendar year five times in a row. However, opponents Mainz have only won one of their last five games to begin a new year.
2. Historic results favour FCB
FC Bayern have won 14 of the last 16 Bundesliga clashes against Mainz (one draw, one defeat). Most recently, this features six wins in a row. In addition, the recent home record shows a clear advantage for the men from Munich: FCB have won their last three games against Mainz at the Allianz Arena with an outstanding goal aggregate of 16:1. FCB do not have a better record from the most recent three home games against any other current Bundesliga club (also three wins and 16:1 against Schalke).
3. Strong comeback qualities for FCB
FC Bayern have fallen 1-0 behind in each of their past seven Bundesliga games, but managed to avoid defeat every time and pick up 15 points - the best in the league.
4. Best FIFA Men's Player remains on top form
The Best FIFA Men's Player Robert Lewandowski has scored all of FCB's last five Bundesliga goals. In the 2-1 win at Leverkusen last matchday, he netted his 16th and 17th goals of the season. This equals the Bundesliga record after 13 matchdays (Gerd Müller 1968/69 and 1976/77).
5. Best attack against second-weakest defence
With 39 goals from 13 games and an average of three goals per game, FC Bayern are by far the most dangerous attacking side this Bundesliga season. Mainz have already conceded 26 goals and have the second-weakest defence ahead of Schalke 04 (36).
